Set up Air Mate in Slack

Add Air Mate to a Slack channel or open a direct message with it, and it guides you through the setup process. It gives you a link to Air Teams, where you choose the project, repository, and tools Air Mate works with. When it's ready, it posts a message in Slack, and you can send your first request.

Before you start

  • The Air Mate Slack app is installed in your workspace. Install it from the link in your EAP invitation. If your workspace requires approval for new apps, ask a workspace admin to approve it.

  • You have a GitHub repository to give Air Mate, and Air Teams can access it. For repositories owned by a GitHub organization, see Organization repository access.

  • To set up a team Air Mate for a channel, you are the channel creator or a Slack workspace admin, and an admin of the Air Teams project you'll use.

  • Your organization is fine with the models Air Mate uses – see Models and AI credits.

Set up Air Mate for a channel

A team Air Mate belongs to a project that uses project AI credits. You can reuse an existing project or create one during setup.

Connect Air Mate to a channel

  1. In the Slack channel, run /invite and select Air Mate.

  2. In the message that only you can see, click Set Up in Air. If no message appears, mention @Air Mate in the channel.

  3. Sign in to Air Teams and, if prompted, choose your organization.

  4. Choose a project you administer and click Next, or click New Project and enter a name. Keep Use project AI credits selected – Air Mate works only with project credits, and the project's automations will spend them too.

The Set up your project page with Trailhead as the project name and Use project AI credits selected
  5. Choose the Air Mate that should answer in this channel. To create one, click New Bot, fill in the form, and click Create Air Mate:

    • Air Mate name – Slack shows it next to the app name, for example Air Mate [Trailhead].

    • Repository or environment – the code Air Mate works with. Choose an environment if it needs dependencies, secrets, or network settings.

    • Rules – boundaries that requests in Slack can't override.

    • Connectors – the MCP services Air Mate can use, for example, an issue tracker, a code review service, and so on.

You can change these later – see Configure Air Mate.

  6. Select the Air Mate and click Connect.

  7. Return to the channel and wait for Air Mate to post that it's ready. Preparing its cloud environment can take a few minutes.

The setup link expires at the time shown in the message. To get a new one, run /airmate reset in the channel.

Set up a personal Air Mate

A personal Air Mate answers only you, in your direct messages with the app. You can have one, and it doesn't need a project. You create it from Slack; in Air Teams, you can only review and change it.

Connect Air Mate to your direct messages

  1. In Slack, search for Air Mate and select the app. On its Messages tab, send it any message. You can also go to Settings | Personal Air Mate in Air Teams and click Open Air Mate in Slack.

  2. Click Set Up in Air and sign in to Air Teams.

  3. Fill in the same fields as for a team Air Mate, then create it. Air Teams opens Settings | Personal Air Mate, where you can review or change it later.

  4. Return to the direct message and wait for Air Mate to post that it's ready.

In a direct message, you don't need to mention Air Mate. Group direct messages aren't supported.

Send your first request

Start with something easy to check. In a channel, mention Air Mate and continue in its reply thread:

@Air Mate Summarize how this repository is organized. Link to the main application code and the tests. Don't change any files.

Check that the answer refers to the right repository. Air Mate may also ask about your team so it can help better later.

For more kinds of requests, see Work with Air Mate.

Disconnect or switch Air Mate

To disconnect Air Mate from a conversation, run /airmate reset in it. In a channel, this takes the same Slack permissions as setup. Air Mate stops answering there, and the command posts a new setup link that you can use to connect the same or a different Air Mate.
