Air Context
Air Context is a semantic code search service for AI coding agents. It indexes your repositories and lets agents find the relevant code by meaning instead of searching files one by one. Use it if you work with coding agents in the terminal, in Air in IDEs, or in Air Teams, or if you're an organization admin who wants to control which repositories are indexed.
Most problem-solving and feature development tasks require agents to perform extensive code exploration to understand the current state or get a reference for the planned changes. In practice this means running searches, spinning up exploration subagents, and reading files – activities that often consume a lot of time and tokens. Air Context lets agents query a prepared index instead. Both Git repositories and non-Git folders can be indexed. Air Context is a cloud service: it computes the embeddings for your code on the Air Context server, so an internet connection is required to index and search.
Air Context does the following:
Indexes code using an embedding backend, incrementally and at scale.
Preserves code privacy by storing vector representations of your code rather than the raw source. See Security and data privacy.
Exposes semantic search tools and skills that agents call to "ask" for relevant files, APIs, tests, patterns, or examples instead of manual grep-style exploration.
Lets agents understand and navigate large, complex codebases faster and cheaper, while maintaining or improving solution quality.
Provides its own CLI to integrate into your agents, manage indexing, and run searches. It also works in Air in IDEs and Air Teams, and lets an organization control indexing from JetBrains Console.
Availability
You need a JetBrains AI subscription (AI Free, AI Pro, AI Ultimate, or AI Enterprise). Paid and complimentary IDE licenses include AI Free, except IntelliJ IDEA Community Edition and PyCharm Community Edition.
If your organization manages AI centrally through Air Governance, an administrator must first enable AI for the organization and grant AI access before you can use Air Context.
Where you can use Air Context
- Terminal and CI
Run the Air Context CLI command
jbcontexton Linux, macOS, or Windows to index and search your code, and set up your coding agents, such as Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, and Junie CLI, to work with Air Context. Once set up, the agents query Air Context automatically, and session hooks keep the index up to date. On a build agent with an organization service account, the CLI indexes large repositories for your whole organization. For more information, see Quickstart with the Air Context CLI and Index repositories in CI.
- Air in IDEs
Air in IDEs runs your CLI coding agents in the IDE, so if you set up the Air Context CLI for an agent, it's available in your local IDE sessions.
- Air Teams
Air Teams runs Air Context indexing for connected repositories and configures the agents to use it for remote runs in the configured environments.
For more information about connecting repositories, see Connect repositories.
- Air Governance
An administrator can connect the organization's repositories in JetBrains Console to schedule regular Air Context indexing for them. They can also control whether indexing is available for your organization, whether users are allowed to perform on-demand indexing with the Air Context CLI, and delete existing Air Context indexes.
For more information, see Air Context indexing.
